THE PARENT PLAYBOOK: How to mentally support your youth athlete
ETHAN G. TABAKELIS, M.S., CMPC® • CHAMPIONSHIP MINDSET Blueprints
"Physical performance is won or lost in the mind. When athletes default to perfectionism, their confidence and self-worth fluctuate with every single shift."
1. RE-WIRE SELF-WORTH: 3 ANCHORS OF INTERNAL VALIDATION
Validate the Work
Praise preparation, grit, and recovery instead of outcomes.
"I loved your backcheck and reset after that bounce."
The 30-Min Car Rule
No post-game critiquing. Let them initiate any technical talk once they have emotionally returned to a neutral baseline.
Allow the central nervous system to de-escalate naturally first.
Separate Jersey & Kid
Reinforce that your pride in them is completely insulated from their performance on the ice.
Unconditional safety yields aggressive, loose, and joyful play.
2. DEEPEN CONFIDENCE: 3 RULES OF THE UNSHAKEABLE ATHLETE
| The Rule | On-Ice Application | Your Parental Support |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Collect Receipts | Log daily physical executions (Excellence) and clean, immediate mistake recoveries (Resilience). | Ask: "What is one clean execution and one successful reset you logged today?" |
| 2. Run the Reset | Run a 5-Second Somatic Reset after turnovers: Recognize, Release (deep exhale), and Refocus on a tactical target. | Do not showcase panic, frustration, or negative body language from the stands. |
| 3. Choose Approach | Focus on what to execute (Approach) instead of playing on your heels trying not to mess up (Avoidance). | Deliver pre-game cues that are instructional (e.g., "Track the puck early") rather than avoidant. |
